I spent the past three years working on this companion book to his popular Cool Plants for Hot Gardens. He finished up in time to have it printed and published just in time for planting season here in the desert southwest.
The book follows the same format as Cool Plants, the plants are arranged alphabetically by genus and then species and each species account covers two pages. This allows for all the information and pictures to be seen without having to flip back and forth. The categories are all the same, and include; Etymology, field Notes, Description, Culture, Identification, Landscape Application, and Precautions.
In the header, along with Scientific name and common name, I created categories based on growth form and in this presentation, I illustrate a small selection of species in each plant category of which there are nine for the cacti and five for the succulents.
As with Cool Plants, I created a Plant Database which has the plants grouped by categories and includes pollinators, water use, and page number.
The presentation is 45-60 minutes with questions encouraged during the talk.
I hope you will join me and other plant fanatics in this tour of awesome cacti and succulents that grow well in the desert southwest.
