Botanical Art with Mixed Media: English Garden Florals

DATE: Wednesday 6/25/25   TIME: 5:30pm - 7:30pm

This spring Adela Antoinette had the opportunity to explore botanical gardens in the UK and sketched many florals she came across throughout her visit. Bringing the English garden to the U.S., this class is a great introduction mixed media used in sketchbooks. We will explore watercolor, ink, and colored pencil techniques for this workshop. As we observe a wide range of English garden florals, we will also learn how to keep a botanical sketchbook that can be used as a reference for years to come!

Main Concepts: Basics in watercolor color application, ink techniques and sketchbook keeping.

Please provide your own art materials. Recommended art materials (Substitute as needed):

A few reference photos will be sent out before class begins

2H, 4H, or Color pencil w/ eraser, eraser (Streader), & kneaded eraser

Sketchbook. Any travel size but 5”x7,” or 8” x 10” work great. (Stillman & Birn Zeta Series Mixed MediaCrescent Rendr, or Moleskin Watercolor sketchbooks work great – extra heavy weight, 270gsm, or 140lb +

Watercolor – Winsor & Newton Assorted Colors 6-12pk (Any variety of watercolor brand and colors are okay) + Mixing Palette.

Assorted Size Pens (Copic Multi-liners or Micron) 0.1, 0.3, & 0.5

Assorted Colored Pencils – Prisma color 6-12pk works great.

Paint Brushes: #4 Long Round, #6 Long Round, & Synthetic inexpensive brush for mixing.

Two water jars/cups, mixing palette and paper towels or towels.

Optional: small spray bottle or eye dropper

Instructor - Adela Antoinette

Adela Antoinette (She/Her) is a published illustrator, designer and makeup artist. As a southwest born desert dweller, Antoinette’s work primarily centers on Sonoran Desert flora but fluctuates within botany through visiting different regions across the states. She specializes in various traditional mediums including her favorite, watercolor in which she has taught in workshops and classes at the Denali Education Center and The Drawing Studio. Her work has been displayed in various galleries in Arizona, Alaska, and California. Antoinette studied illustration and design at the University of Arizona, receiving her degree in Visual Communication. She is a Tucson, Arizona artist currently living in New York City.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

No refund will be issued less than 15 days prior to any Community Class. A $10 cancellation fee will be applied to all refunds. No refunds will be issued for special events. We reserve the right to cancel Community Classes due to insufficient registration, garden closure, or inclement weather, in which case, participants will receive a full refund. People with disabilities should make requests for accommodation as early as possible to allow time to make appropriate arrangements.
